Breast Uplift Surgery by Anthony MacQuillan
A Breast Uplift, or Mastopexy, is a specialised surgical procedure designed to reshape and elevate sagging breasts. This operation not only lifts the breasts but also aims to enhance their overall contour and firmness, creating a more harmonious body profile. Often, this procedure includes resizing the areola to achieve a balanced appearance between the areola and the newly shaped breast.
The procedure primarily targets improving the shape and position of the breasts. It addresses issues brought on by ageing, gravity, childbirth, and changes in body weight. The goal is to attain a more aesthetically pleasing and uplifted breast profile, enhancing the overall appearance and proportion of the breasts in relation to the body.
This surgery aims to provide a natural-looking improvement, allowing for a wider range of clothing choices, including swimwear and lingerie. It’s important to note that this surgery focuses on shape and elevation rather than size enhancement.
Your breasts are uplifted so the natural volume you already have is used to plump up the upper portion of the breast, with the excess skin being removed and a new “internal bra” created using your skin and breast tissue to hold up your new breasts.
Nipples are relocated and moved up the breast to their correct position and the breast tissue folded in such a way that the breast assumes a more youthful shape.
This results in a fine scar around the nipple, with a vertical scar running down from the nipple to the breast crease to create a “Lollipop shape”. Sometimes if there is a lot of skin excess a further scar in the breast crease is needed resulting in an “Anchor shape” scar. Scar Minimisation treatments are available and scars typically fade over time.
Anthony uses the latest 3D scanning technology to create before and after visuals that give you a realistic view of the results.

Benefits of the Breast Uplift Procedure
Undergoing a Breast Uplift can bring about a range of positive outcomes, primarily related to the enhancement of your physical appearance and the way you perceive your body.
Enhancement of Physical Appearance
- The Breast Uplift raises and reshapes sagging breasts, resulting in a more elevated and defined breast profile. This change can significantly improve the overall appearance of your breasts.
- It can also address issues of asymmetry where one breast may be lower or shaped differently than the other, leading to a more balanced look.
- For breasts that have become elongated or flattened, a Breast Uplift can restore a more traditionally appealing shape.
- Resizing and repositioning of the areola can also be part of the process, which contributes to a more proportional and aesthetically pleasing breast appearance.
Impact on Clothing and Comfort
- Many women find that their clothing fits better post-surgery. Bras, swimsuits, and form-fitting garments often sit more comfortably and look more flattering.
- The procedure can also expand your choices in clothing, allowing you to wear styles that you may have avoided before due to the shape of your breasts.
Physical Comfort and Lifestyle Improvements
- While the primary focus of a Breast Uplift is aesthetic, the procedure can also alleviate some physical discomforts associated with sagging breasts, such as skin irritation beneath the breast fold.
- Engaging in certain physical activities might become more comfortable post-surgery, as the repositioned breasts can reduce physical hindrances and discomfort during exercise.
Is a Breast Uplift for you?
If you’re finding that your breasts have `lost their shape or sag significantly, a Breast Uplift might be a suitable option for you. This procedure, designed to raise and reshape the breasts, is most effective for individuals who meet certain criteria:
Characteristics of Ideal Candidates for Breast Uplift
- You may notice that your breasts have a pendulous shape but are satisfied with their size. This condition is often the primary indicator that a Breast Uplift could be beneficial.
- Your nipples and areolas might point downward, a common sign that the breast tissue has sagged.
- It’s not unusual for one breast to be positioned lower than the other, resulting in asymmetry. A Breast Uplift can address this imbalance.
- If your breasts appear flat or elongated, Breast Uplift can help restore a more defined and raised breast contour.
- Women who have experienced changes in their breasts due to life events such as childbirth, breastfeeding, or fluctuations in weight often seek this surgery. However, it’s important that your weight is stable, and you’re not planning any future pregnancies. Significant weight changes or breastfeeding post-surgery can alter the results and potentially reverse the improvements made.
- Good overall health is a key factor. This includes being a non-smoker or prepared to quit smoking, as smoking can negatively affect the healing process and increase the risk of complications during and after surgery.
- Another important aspect is having a realistic understanding of what the surgery can and cannot achieve. This procedure enhances the shape and position of your breasts but won’t fundamentally change your body image. Your expectations should be aligned with what is realistically achievable through surgery.
- If you’re troubled by the feeling that your breasts are too low or have lost their original shape and volume, a Breast Uplift could offer a solution. However, it’s crucial to discuss your individual circumstances and goals with Anthony. He can provide a comprehensive assessment and advise whether this surgery is the most suitable option for you.
Types of Breast Uplift Procedures
Inverted T or “Anchor” Lift
The most popular and extensive form of breast uplift for individuals requiring significant reshaping and lifting.
Involves an anchor-shaped incision: one around the areola, another running vertically down to the breast crease, and a third along the breast crease.
This technique addresses considerable sagging and can also reduce the size of the areola.
Due to its extensive nature, it results in more scarring compared to other techniques but provides the most dramatic and long-lasting reshaping results.
Vertical or “Lollipop” Lift
Designed for moderate lifting and reshaping.
This procedure involves two incisions: one around the areola and another running vertically from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, forming a ‘lollipop’ shape.
It’s effective for correcting moderate sagging and reshaping the breast for a more elevated appearance.
This technique can achieve more significant reshaping than the peri-areolar lift without the need for extensive incisions.
Crescent Lift
This technique is utilised for minor lifting requirements.
It involves a small incision that runs halfway around the top half of the edge of the areola.
Suitable for those who require only a slight change in the breast position.
Often used when a Breast Uplift is performed in conjunction with Breast Augmentation – for minor lifting.
Peri-Areolar or “Donut” Lift
Appropriate for mild lifting and reshaping.
Involves a circular incision running around the entire edge of the areola.
This method can help correct mild sagging and is often combined with Breast Augmentation.
Results in minimal scarring and is suitable for those who need a slight modification without significant reshaping.
How is Breast Uplift Surgery Performed?
The process, while somewhat complex, is meticulously carried out to ensure the best possible outcome. Here is a detailed overview of what happens during a Breast Uplift procedure.
Breast Uplift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, generally takes about 2 hours and usually requires an overnight stay in hospital.
Anaesthesia
- Administered for your comfort during the Breast Uplift procedure.
- The type of anaesthesia used will depend on the specifics of the surgery and Anthony’s recommendations.
- Options include general anaesthesia, where you’ll be asleep during the operation, or local anaesthesia combined with sedation.
Incision
- The nature of the incision depends on the chosen technique, which aligns with the extent of lift required and your desired results.
- Incision options range from a minimal incision around the areola to more extensive incisions for significant reshaping.
- Anthony will have discussed the most appropriate incision pattern for your needs during your consultation.
Reshaping
- Once the incisions are made, Anthony will remove excess skin and lift the breast tissue to a higher position.
- If necessary, the nipples and areolas may be repositioned or resized to better suit the new shape of the breasts.
- The goal is to create a more elevated and aesthetically pleasing breast contour.
Closing the Incisions
- Anthony will close the incisions using sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape.
- These techniques are chosen to minimise scarring and support the new shape of your breasts.
- The method of closure is carefully selected based on the incision type and your skin type.
Results
- You can expect to see the changes to your breasts immediately after the surgery.
- Initially, post-surgical swelling and the presence of surgical dressings may obscure the final outcome.
- It’s important to follow Anthony’s advice on post-operative care to ensure optimal healing and the best possible results.
You will have surgical drains (a tube in each breast to drain any collection of blood) following the operation – this will be removed the following day before you go home.
Post-op
After surgery, you will need to wear a non-underwired support bra for 6 weeks to help support the breast tissue while it heals.
You will need to avoid any serious physical activity for the first 2 weeks and avoid any heavy lifting (which includes small children). After this, you can gradually increase your activity and by 6 weeks you can resume all normal activities.
The extent of breast lifting and reshaping required determines the type of procedure that’s most suitable for you.
Each Breast Uplift technique has its specific indications, benefits, and considerations. The choice of procedure depends on the degree of lifting required, the natural breast size and shape, and the desired outcome. It’s important to consult with Anthony who can evaluate your unique needs and recommend the most suitable technique for you. He will consider your body shape, the condition of your breast tissue, and your aesthetic goals to ensure the best possible results from your Breast Uplift surgery.
Recovery after Breast Uplift Procedure
The period following a Breast Uplift surgery is crucial for ensuring the best possible results and your overall comfort. Recovery experiences differ from one individual to another, but there are common guidelines and stages you can expect. Being aware of these can help you prepare and navigate the recovery process more effectively.
Rest
- Allowing your body ample time to heal is key to a successful recovery.
- You should plan to take it easy for at least the first few days following surgery.
- Adequate rest not only promotes healing but also helps in managing discomfort.
Activity Restrictions
- It is advised to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and vigorous exercise, for a specified period post-surgery.
- Anthony will provide guidance on when it’s safe to gradually resume these activities.
- Following these instructions is important to avoid complications and ensure proper healing.
Support Garments
- Wearing a support bra or compression garment is essential to minimise swelling and support your breasts as they heal.
- This garment helps in maintaining the new breast shape and can also reduce discomfort.
- Anthony will advise you on how long to wear the support garment and may recommend specific types.
Follow-up Appointments
- Attending scheduled appointments with Anthony is critical for monitoring your recovery.
- These appointments allow Anthony to assess the healing process and address any concerns you may have.
- They also provide an opportunity to get advice on post-operative care and any adjustments to your recovery plan.
Managing Discomfort
- You may experience some pain, swelling, and bruising, which is normal following Breast Uplift surgery.
- Anthony will likely prescribe medication to manage pain and advise on how to reduce swelling.
- It’s important to follow these recommendations closely.
Return to Normal Activities
- Most women can return to work and normal daily activities within a few weeks, depending on the nature of their job and the extent of the surgery.
- It’s crucial to avoid rushing this process and allow your body the time it needs to recover fully.
Long-term Recovery
- Swelling may take several months to fully subside, and incision lines may take longer to fade.
- It’s important to maintain realistic expectations about the recovery timeline and the gradual nature of seeing the final results.
- Long-term care, including proper support and maintaining a stable weight, is important for maintaining the results of your surgery.
Throughout your recovery, it’s vital to maintain open communication with Anthony and follow their guidance closely. This ensures not only a smooth recovery but also helps in achieving the best possible outcome from your Breast Uplift procedure.

FAQs
Find out more about your surgical journey
Will my breasts look identical after a Breast Uplift?
No one has two breasts that are exactly the same. Although you will not be symmetrical following the procedure, it often has a symmetrising effect. Any pre-existing asymmetries between your breasts will influence the final outcome of the procedure.
How long do the results of a Breast Uplift last?
The effects of Mastopexy provide a pleasing and youthful appearance to the breast, however, the surgery does not defy gravity or time.
There will be inevitably some stretching of the soft tissues leading to a degree of recurrence of the pre-operative shape of the breast, as tissues age.
A good analogy is that Breast Uplift surgery turns back the clock back but does not stop it ticking.
What are the risks of Breast Uplift procedure?
Like any surgical procedure Breast Uplift surgery has a set of potential risks and complications, including;
Scarring
- The extent and visibility of scars depend on the specific technique used and your body’s healing process.
- Anthony will discuss scar placement and size with you prior to the surgery.
- Over time, most scars fade significantly, but they may not disappear completely.
Changes in Nipple or Breast Sensation
- You may experience a temporary change in the sensation of your nipples or breasts after the surgery.
- For some, this could be an increase in sensitivity, while others might notice numbness.
- These changes are often temporary, but in rare cases, they can be permanent.
Irregularities or Asymmetry in Breast Shape and Size
- While Anthony strives for symmetry, slight differences in size, shape, or nipple position may occur.
- Post-surgical changes in the healing process can also contribute to asymmetry.
- It’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that perfect symmetry is not always achievable.
Potential Inability to Breastfeed
- A Breast Uplift can potentially impact your ability to breastfeed.
- This depends on the type of incision used and how much tissue is altered during the surgery.
- If breastfeeding is a concern, discuss this with Anthony, as he can tailor the surgery to preserve as much breast tissue and nipple sensitivity as possible.
Other Potential Risks
- As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, bleeding, and reaction to anaesthesia.
- There may be complications related to wound healing, which can affect the final outcome.
- In rare cases, additional surgery may be required to correct any complications or achieve the desired results.

Patient satisfaction is the top priority for Anthony. You can find how patients feel about his work below.Tummy Tuck and Breast Lift at 59
I am now 6 weeks out from a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast lift and have found this site so helpful, I wanted to share my journey. I know some people have recovered quickly but that has not been my experience.
I am 59 years old, I have 3 children the last one at 40 years old, I had also lost quite a bit of weight.
For the 2 days I was in hospital I was comfortable. When I came home I was in a lot of pain and bent in half and I did not stand up straight for 4 weeks. I slept for the first week in a recliner chair (you can get from a garden centre). I used a hot water bottle on my back which ached from being bent over.
I purchased from a disability shop a pee pot (as it was so painful to move) and a triangular pillow and after a week I was able to sleep in bed propped up with this pillow and 2 others and a pillow under my knees. I took pain medication and anti-sickness tablets every day.
I was ok as long as I did not sneeze, cough, laugh or move and did not do much for the first 2 weeks.
My breast pain was more than the tummy at first and one breast swelled more than the other. You get shooting pains in both the breast and the tummy as you heal and the tummy feels very tight. My tummy button smelled and my consultant changed the dressing a couple of times until it had dried out.
At 6 weeks, I suddenly overnight no longer need the painkillers. I have today taken off my binder from my waist and all the tape from my scars. I have a small hole under my right breast which is taking time to heal and this is still being dressed and I think this can be quite common. I have today started to massage the oil into my scars morning and evening.
I found the 6 weeks with the waist binder very comfortable and quite reassuring. I had the surgeons tape on my breasts for 2 weeks and I have had the surgery bra on for 6 weeks and have to keep on 24/7 for another 6 weeks, although I now change into a softer sports bra at night. The constant wearing of the bra makes you itchy, I washed the bras so I had a clean bra on every day and every night, and used baby wipes and moisturizer and that made me more comfortable.
My surgeon did a bilateral breast lift and full tummy tuck including tightening my stomach muscles which were 2-3cms apart.
It is still a bit uncomfortable to sleep on my side all night but I can while alternating with sleeping on my back.
I am very pleased with the results so far and I know I still have swelling. I would just say everyone is different, take it easy and give yourself time.

I m 9 weeks out and I can do everything I want to do. Driving, working, walking.
My scars are healing really well, I am very pleased with my tummy and my breasts are an amazing shape.
I have had fantastic after care from
Mr McQuillan he really is a very nice guy. He even saw me on 27th December in the evening when I was worried about my breast swelling (which was fine). He has made it clear I can contact him at any time if I am worried.
Mr McQuillan’s secretary Amanda has responded straight away to my emails and his cosmetic nurse Michelle has responded to my emails by calling me and seeing me straight away for dressings and any concerns. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Updated on 18 May 2021:
I am now 5 months from my tummy tuck and breast lift. I recently went back to my surgeon to have a dogear removed from my left breast. I believe this is quite common, a small piece of puckered skin.
I also had a revision on my tummy button as this had closed up quite tight and I am still stretching this every day. Both procedures were done under local anaesthetic. I am using organic rosehip oil on my scars every day and they are much flatter and healing well.
The aftercare from Mr Anthony McQuillan and his team has been fantastic,. Since my operation on 12th December, I have seen him at every follow up appointment, any concerns I have had have been responded to very quickly nd I have been given n appointment.
I am thrilled with my results!
I underwent a breast lift and tummy tuck with muscle repair and liposuction to my flanks with Anthony MacQuillan in January 2019 I am thrilled with my results!
Anthony is an excellent surgeon – very realistic about what he can achieve and very skilled. An added bonus is that he is a thoroughly nice man
I would not hesitate to go to him again for further surgery or indeed to recommend him to anyone
I am now 4 months post op with a full tummy tuck and muscle repair carried out by Anthony MacQuillan and his team at Sulis Hospital Bath (formally The Circle).
From the first telephone conversation with his PA Amanda, through to my 10 week check up, everything has been wonderful and worth every single penny. Anthony has a Fantastic bedside manor and ensures that you are fully informed before anything happens.
My initial consultation lasted around an hour as I was originally just considering the tummy tuck. I wanted some more information on a breast lift to see if I wanted to go ahead with that too. This was carried out at a separate 1 hour appointment as Anthony didn’t want to overload me with information.
I felt that I could have had as many appointments with him as I needed before I made my decision, but as it stood, I’d been researching the procedure for 11 years after having my first child and felt informed enough that it was just a case of booking my surgery date…which I did as soon as I returned home after first meeting him!
I arrived at the Sulis on the morning of my procedure at 7am and by 8.30am I had been admitted, seen my Anaesthetist (also lovely) to discuss medication and been marked up by Anthony and taken down to theatre! Next thing I remember I was awake in recovery. I felt very comfortable with no pain (which was great as I’ve had a few previous abdominal (Gynaecological) surgeries and have woken up extremely uncomfortable. This time I was just looking forward to my lunch!
My private room was lovely and all the nursing staff were great. The food was fantastic and my medication was given in a timely manor and I didn’t ever feel uncomfortable or in pain. I stayed two nights before being discharged home with all of the medication I needed to fully recover in comfort.
I saw Michelle, Anthony’s personal nurse regularly for all dressing changes and again, she is wonderful and nothing is too much trouble and no question or worry is too silly. I saw Anthony a couple of times up to ten weeks and I am ecstatic with my results so far.
It’s definitely a process and not a decision to be taken lightly. It isn’t by any means a quick fix and the swelling rollercoaster lasts around a year and isn’t fun at all. I am so excited to see my results in a few months when I am fully healed. However I currently look as good as I did when I was in my late teens so it can only get better right!
Chose Anthony. You will not be disappointed!
