About Mummy Makeover Surgery
Deciding to pursue a Mummy Makeover is a significant choice for many after the experience of motherhood. The essence of a Mummy Makeover lies in its bespoke nature, offering a combination of procedures that can include anything from Tummy Tuck and Breast Lift to Liposuction, depending on individual concerns and goals.
The term “Mummy Makeover” might sound casual, almost as if it’s a day out at the spa, but in reality, it’s a complex and sophisticated suite of surgical procedures aimed at addressing the physical changes many women experience after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
A Mummy Makeover is tailored to each woman’s unique body and aesthetic goals. Core procedures include Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck), which not only removes excess skin and fat but also repairs separated abdominal muscles for improved posture and reduced back pain; various breast surgeries to restore or enhance the shape and size lost to breastfeeding and pregnancy; and Liposuction to refine and sculpt the body further. Additional options like vaginal rejuvenation or fat transfer and non-surgical skin treatments allow for a customisation of the makeover to individual needs and desires. Performed either as a single extensive surgery or in stages tailored to the patient’s health, this approach optimises recovery, minimising downtime and facilitating a quicker return to daily life.

Who Needs a Mummy Makeover?
It’s not just about desiring a change in appearance; it’s about addressing specific physical changes that diet, exercise, and time cannot adequately reverse. The ideal candidates for a Mummy Makeover are those who have completed their families and are looking to address the lasting impacts of pregnancy and childbirth on their bodies.
Good candidates for the procedure are:
- Post-pregnancy Women: The primary candidates for a Mummy Makeover are women who have experienced physical changes following pregnancy and childbirth that have not improved to their satisfaction with non-surgical methods. These changes can include sagging breasts, loose abdominal skin, separated abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat deposits.
- Those at a Stable Weight: Candidates should be at or near their ideal weight and have maintained it for at least six months. Considerable weight fluctuations post-surgery can alter the results of the makeover, so stability in weight is important.
- Non-smokers: Smoking can significantly increase the risk of complications during and after surgery. Candidates for a Mummy Makeover are advised to be non-smokers or willing to quit well in advance of the surgery and throughout the recovery period.
- In Good General Health: Undergoing any surgical procedure requires good overall health to ensure the best outcomes and minimise risks. Candidates should have no underlying health conditions that could complicate surgery or recovery.
- Done with Childbearing: It’s recommended that women consider surgery only after they have finished having children. Subsequent pregnancies can compromise the results of the procedures, necessitating further surgery.
- Realistic Expectations: Understanding what a Mummy Makeover can and cannot achieve is crucial. Candidates should have a realistic outlook on the outcomes, the limitations of cosmetic surgery, and the recovery process.
In addition to these physical considerations, the psychological readiness of the candidate plays a significant role. A Mummy Makeover can offer dramatic changes in one’s appearance, which can be emotionally uplifting but also requires adjustment. Candidates should be mentally prepared for the transformation and have a strong support system in place to help them through the recovery process.
Benefits of the Mummy Makeover Procedure
The benefits of a Mummy Makeover are many, impacting various aspects of a woman’s life:
Physical Restoration and Enhancement
- Improved Body Contour: One of the most immediate benefits is the significant improvement in body shape and contour. By addressing areas like the abdomen, breasts, hips, and thighs, the procedure can restore a more youthful and balanced silhouette. For many women, this means returning to a pre-pregnancy figure or achieving their desired body shape for the first time.
- Tightened Abdominal Muscles: Pregnancy can stretch and separate the abdominal muscles, a condition known as diastasis recti, which no amount of exercise can fully repair. A Tummy Tuck, which is a key component of the Mummy Makeover, tightens these muscles and removes excess skin, resulting in a firmer, flatter abdomen.
- Breast Rejuvenation: Changes in breast size and shape are common after pregnancy and breastfeeding. A Mummy Makeover often includes a Breast Lift, Augmentation, or Reduction to restore or enhance the breasts’ appearance, leading to improved proportion and symmetry.
- Reduction of Stubborn Fat Deposits: Liposuction included in the surgery targets stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, further refining the body’s contours and enhancing the overall result.
Psychological and Emotional Benefits
- Renewed Confidence and Self-Image: The physical changes that accompany pregnancy can affect a woman’s confidence and how she perceives herself. A Mummy Makeover can help restore confidence in one’s appearance, leading to a more positive self-image and a greater sense of well-being.
- Increased Comfort and Lifestyle Benefits: Physical discomfort and limitations in clothing options can result from changes in body shape post-pregnancy. By addressing these physical issues, a Mummy Makeover can increase comfort in daily activities and expand wardrobe choices, positively impacting lifestyle and social interactions.
- Motivation for a Healthy Lifestyle: The improvements achieved through a Mummy Makeover can serve as a strong motivator for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet. This not only helps sustain the results of the surgery but also contributes to overall health and wellness.
Types of Procedures Included in a Mummy Makeover
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Central to the Mummy Makeover, the Tummy Tuck addresses the abdominal area’s skin, fat, and muscle. It involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and the tightening of the abdominal muscles. This procedure is particularly effective in rectifying diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles) and removing stretch marks that are located below the belly button.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A Breast Lift addresses sagging and restores the breasts to a more youthful position. For many women, pregnancy and breastfeeding result in a loss of breast volume and elasticity. A Mastopexy can lift the breasts, remove excess skin, and tighten the surrounding tissue to achieve an uplifted, firmer breast contour.
Breast Augmentation
For women who experience a significant loss of breast volume post-pregnancy, breast enlargement can restore or enhance breast size. This procedure uses either implants (silicone or saline) or fat transfer to achieve the desired volume and shape.
Liposuction
Liposuction is used to remove stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. It can be performed on various body parts, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, and back, to refine and contour the body’s shape.
Breast Reduction
Some women may experience an increase in breast size after pregnancy and breastfeeding, leading to physical discomfort and a desire for a reduction. This procedure removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body.
Vaginal Rejuvenation
Childbirth can stretch and weaken vaginal tissues and muscles, affecting both appearance and function. Vaginal rejuvenation (including Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty) can tighten these tissues, improving comfort, aesthetics, and sexual satisfaction.
Skin Treatments
Non-surgical procedures, such as laser therapy and chemical peels, can be included to improve the skin’s texture, tone, and appearance, including the reduction of stretch marks and scars.
How is the Mummy Makeover Procedure Performed?
The Mummy Makeover procedure is a process that combines various surgical techniques to address and correct the physical changes women experience due to pregnancy and childbirth. The process involves careful planning, surgical skill, and a personalised approach to ensure safety, effectiveness, and your satisfaction. Here’s a detailed look into how a Mummy Makeover procedure is performed:
Initial Consultation and Planning
The journey to a Mummy Makeover begins with an in-depth consultation with Anthony. During this meeting, you’ll discuss your medical history, aesthetic goals, and any concerns you have. Anthony will evaluate your body, focusing on areas affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding, such as the abdomen, breasts, hips, and thighs. This consultation is crucial for developing a customised surgical plan that addresses your specific needs and goals.
Pre-operative Preparation
Before the surgery, you’ll receive detailed instructions to prepare for the procedure. This may include guidelines on diet, medications, and lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, to minimise the risk of complications. You may also be asked to undergo medical evaluations or lab testing to ensure you’re in good health for surgery.
Anaesthesia
Mummy Makeovers are performed under general anaesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. An anaesthesiologist will monitor your vital signs and manage your anaesthesia throughout the surgery to ensure your safety.
Surgical Techniques
The specific techniques used during a Mummy Makeover vary depending on the combination of procedures you and Anthony have decided on. Here’s an overview of common components:
- Tummy Tuck: Anthony makes a horizontal incision above the pubic hairline to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen. The abdominal muscles are then tightened, and the remaining skin is pulled down and sutured into place. A new opening for the belly button may be created to maintain a natural appearance.
- Breast Lift or Augmentation: For a Breast Lift, an incision is made around the areola and possibly down the breast and across the breast crease to remove excess skin and lift the breast tissue. Implants may be inserted in combination with a lift or as a standalone procedure to increase breast size.
- Liposuction: Small incisions are made in targeted areas for fat removal. A thin tube (cannula) is inserted through these incisions to loosen excess fat, which is then suctioned out of the body.
Closing the Incisions
Once the procedures are completed, Anthony will close the incisions with sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape. This step is crucial for minimising scarring and promoting healing.
Recovery and Follow-up
After the surgery, you’ll be taken to a recovery area where your condition will be monitored. You may need to stay in the hospital or surgical facility overnight. Before being discharged, you’ll receive detailed instructions for at-home care, including how to care for your surgical sites, medications to take for pain and to reduce the risk of infection, and when to follow up with Anthony.
Recovery from a Mummy Makeover varies but generally includes several weeks of rest and limited activity. You’ll likely wear compression garments to reduce swelling and support healing. Follow-up appointments are essential for monitoring your progress and addressing any concerns.
A Mummy Makeover is a highly personalised suite of cosmetic procedures designed to address the unique concerns of women post-pregnancy. This tailored approach allows for a complex transformation, targeting the areas most affected by childbirth and breastfeeding.
Recovery after Mummy Makeover Procedure
Given the comprehensive nature of the procedure, which often combines abdominal, breast, and additional contouring surgeries, the recovery can be demanding. However, with proper care, planning, and realistic expectations, you can navigate this period effectively, leading to successful and satisfying outcomes. Here’s a look at what to expect during the recovery after a Mummy Makeover:
Immediate Post-operative Period
In the first few days after surgery, it’s common to experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the treated areas. Pain management will be a priority, and Anthony will prescribe medication to help control any discomfort. It’s crucial to follow these prescriptions closely and communicate with Anthony about how effectively pain is being managed.
You’ll likely be instructed to wear compression garments around the treated areas. These garments are essential for reducing swelling, supporting the healing tissues, and helping your body adjust to its new contours. Adhering to this guidance is critical for achieving the best results.
Activity and Rest
Rest is vital during the initial recovery phase. You should plan to take time off work and other responsibilities for at least two weeks, though this can vary based on the extent of your procedures and your body’s healing process. While rest is important, gentle walks and light movement are encouraged early on to promote blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.
Lifting heavy objects, including children, or engaging in strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks. Anthony will provide specific guidelines on when it’s safe to resume these activities.
Follow-up Appointments
Attending follow-up appointments with Anthony is crucial for monitoring your healing progress. These visits allow Anthony to assess the healing of incisions, the reduction of swelling, and to address any concerns you may have. It’s also an opportunity to adjust post-operative care plans if necessary.
Long-term Recovery and Results
As the weeks progress, you’ll notice gradual improvements in swelling and the appearance of treated areas. However, it can take several months for the final results of your Mummy Makeover to be fully visible. Patience is key during this time, as your body adjusts and settles into its new shape.
Scarring is an inevitable part of the recovery process, but scars should fade over time. Anthony can recommend products or treatments to help minimise scarring and promote healing.

FAQs

What is the best time to undergo a Mummy Makeover after having a child?
The ideal time for a Mummy Makeover is after you’ve completed your family and when your weight has stabilised for at least six months. It’s also recommended to wait until you’ve finished breastfeeding so that your breasts have returned to their baseline state, ensuring the results are as consistent as possible.
Are the results of a Mummy Makeover permanent?
The results of a Mummy Makeover can be long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable weight, adhere to a healthy lifestyle, and do not go through additional pregnancies. However, it’s important to remember that natural ageing will continue to affect your body’s appearance over time.
Can I customise which procedures are included in my Mummy Makeover?
A Mummy Makeover is highly customisable based on your specific concerns and goals. During your initial consultation, you and Anthony will discuss which areas you’d like to address, and they will recommend a combination of procedures that can best achieve your desired outcome. This could include a Tummy Tuck, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift or Liposuction, and any additional procedures you might benefit from.
What are the risks of Mummy Makeover?
When considering a Mummy Makeover, it’s imperative to weigh the inherent risks associated with undergoing such a comprehensive set of surgical procedures. Here are some of the risks involved:
- Scarring is an unavoidable outcome of any surgical intervention. The extent and visibility of scars vary depending on the specific procedures involved, and your body’s healing capabilities. Techniques to minimise scarring will be employed, and post-operative care will include guidance on scar management.
- Infection represents a risk with any surgery. Your surgical team will take preventive measures, and you’ll be given instructions on how to care for your wounds to mitigate this risk. Any signs of infection should be addressed promptly to prevent complications.
- Bleeding during and after surgery can occur. While measures are taken to minimise this risk, it’s important to follow pre-surgical advice, such as avoiding certain medications and supplements that can increase bleeding.
- Changes in sensation in the treated areas, particularly the breasts and abdomen, can result from nerve damage during surgery. While this is often temporary, some changes in sensation may be permanent.
- Complications related to anaesthesia are rare but can occur. Discussing your medical history and any concerns with the anaesthesiologist before surgery can help to minimise risks.

Patient satisfaction is the top priority for Anthony. You can find how patients feel about his work below.Tummy Tuck and Breast Lift at 59
I am now 6 weeks out from a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast lift and have found this site so helpful, I wanted to share my journey. I know some people have recovered quickly but that has not been my experience.
I am 59 years old, I have 3 children the last one at 40 years old, I had also lost quite a bit of weight.
For the 2 days I was in hospital I was comfortable. When I came home I was in a lot of pain and bent in half and I did not stand up straight for 4 weeks. I slept for the first week in a recliner chair (you can get from a garden centre). I used a hot water bottle on my back which ached from being bent over.
I purchased from a disability shop a pee pot (as it was so painful to move) and a triangular pillow and after a week I was able to sleep in bed propped up with this pillow and 2 others and a pillow under my knees. I took pain medication and anti-sickness tablets every day.
I was ok as long as I did not sneeze, cough, laugh or move and did not do much for the first 2 weeks.
My breast pain was more than the tummy at first and one breast swelled more than the other. You get shooting pains in both the breast and the tummy as you heal and the tummy feels very tight. My tummy button smelled and my consultant changed the dressing a couple of times until it had dried out.
At 6 weeks, I suddenly overnight no longer need the painkillers. I have today taken off my binder from my waist and all the tape from my scars. I have a small hole under my right breast which is taking time to heal and this is still being dressed and I think this can be quite common. I have today started to massage the oil into my scars morning and evening.
I found the 6 weeks with the waist binder very comfortable and quite reassuring. I had the surgeons tape on my breasts for 2 weeks and I have had the surgery bra on for 6 weeks and have to keep on 24/7 for another 6 weeks, although I now change into a softer sports bra at night. The constant wearing of the bra makes you itchy, I washed the bras so I had a clean bra on every day and every night, and used baby wipes and moisturizer and that made me more comfortable.
My surgeon did a bilateral breast lift and full tummy tuck including tightening my stomach muscles which were 2-3cms apart.
It is still a bit uncomfortable to sleep on my side all night but I can while alternating with sleeping on my back.
I am very pleased with the results so far and I know I still have swelling. I would just say everyone is different, take it easy and give yourself time.
Updated on 18 Feb 2021:
I m 9 weeks out and I can do everything I want to do. Driving, working, walking.
My scars are healing really well, I am very pleased with my tummy and my breasts are an amazing shape.
I have had fantastic after care from
Mr McQuillan he really is a very nice guy. He even saw me on 27th December in the evening when I was worried about my breast swelling (which was fine). He has made it clear I can contact him at any time if I am worried.
Mr McQuillan’s secretary Amanda has responded straight away to my emails and his cosmetic nurse Michelle has responded to my emails by calling me and seeing me straight away for dressings and any concerns. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Updated on 18 May 2021:
I am now 5 months from my tummy tuck and breast lift. I recently went back to my surgeon to have a dogear removed from my left breast. I believe this is quite common, a small piece of puckered skin.
I also had a revision on my tummy button as this had closed up quite tight and I am still stretching this every day. Both procedures were done under local anaesthetic. I am using organic rosehip oil on my scars every day and they are much flatter and healing well.
The aftercare from Mr Anthony McQuillan and his team has been fantastic,. Since my operation on 12th December, I have seen him at every follow up appointment, any concerns I have had have been responded to very quickly nd I have been given n appointment.
I have just been to see Anthony MacQuillan today for my six week follow up appointment. Six weeks ago, Anthony performed an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), repairing my separated abdominal muscles, removing my wobbly mum tum and liposuction following two pregnancies.
My last pregnancy was 19 years ago so I have reluctantly lived with it since then!
The results are truly amazing. For the first time, I have a flat tummy and the confidence to wear what I like.
Mr MacQuillan thoroughly explained the procedure at my initial consultation, as well as the potential hazards. He has been professional, understanding and kind to me at all times. I have sailed through to this six week point with no medical problems at all. However, I would say that I massively underestimated the recovery process at home and I have been fairly incapacitated for the first four weeks. I only now feel able to start resuming my normal daily activities. Of course, someone else may find the recovery easier than I have.
I would not hesitate to recommend Anthony MacQuillan to anyone. He is a gifted surgeon in my opinion. He also appears to be very popular with the nursing staff at The Spire too! I guess that’s the best praise possible!
Thank you also to Anthony’s Secretary, Mandy. Always helpful and kind.
I hope this review helps someone to go ahead with their tummy tuck surgery dream with Mr MacQuillan – you won’t regret it!
I am thrilled with my results!
I underwent a breast lift and tummy tuck with muscle repair and liposuction to my flanks with Anthony MacQuillan in January 2019 I am thrilled with my results!
Anthony is an excellent surgeon – very realistic about what he can achieve and very skilled. An added bonus is that he is a thoroughly nice man
I would not hesitate to go to him again for further surgery or indeed to recommend him to anyone
